Losing My Religion?

Here in the early 21st century, we are as tribal as we were in ancient times; perhaps even more so. Numbed by the digital technology we intended for other uses, we seem to be ever more enslaved to the chants of the crowd.

When the expectation is to blindly follow, what room is left for the individual thinker?

When our institutions seem lost to the crowd, do we have enough faith left to rebuild them?

In a world where everything can be Googled in seconds and we can smother ourselves with snippets of opinion on the Internet, what value should we ascribe to wisdom, to books and knowledge and to those who put in the effort to truly learn?

In a world full of people faking authenticity, appropriating adversity, self-promoting, how should we view those who have quietly endured the greatest of pain?

The more we experience life, the more complex our lives become; we grow more intertwined with other people and more exposed to the indifferent events of the external world.

Decisions can become undecideable. People and events can leave us despondent. What we hold dear can betray us.

In these times, if we are to find hope, from where will it come and for what can it be?
